What makes a neighborhood a great place to live? Neighbors, of course! The people! Studies show that interactions with your neighbors can lift your mood, reduce your stress, and instill a sense of belonging. Knowing your neighbors is also one of the best ways to keep your family safe and prevent crime in your community.
The folks at the East Recreation Center would like to foster this idea of “knowing your neighbor”. We believe that if we put time and effort into investing in our neighborhood, we will play our role in making our little slice of Winona a healthy and lovely place to live.
What do we have in mind? Well, for starters… eating! Throughout the summer, the East Recreation Center staff will be hosting Potluck in the Park every other Thursday evening at 6 p.m.. We will use this time to hang out with our neighbors and provide a place/activity for the neighborhood to gather and get to know one another.
As a centerpiece to this program, each potluck will be paired with an activity intended to benefit our neighborhood as a whole. These activities include: a neighborhood clean-up, a giant garage sale with proceeds going towards a good neighborhood cause, lawn games and music, a community art project, and our National Night Out Block Party.
Our hope is that by the end of the summer, we will have made lasting connections with our neighbors. We hope to use this program as a launching point for learning how our recreation center can be a good neighbor.
