City Attorney

Purpose

The City Attorney is the legal advisor of the City Council and the department heads of the City. 

Responsibilities

The City Attorney is responsible for the prosecution of violations of the city ordinances and petty misdemeanor and misdemeanor offenses committed within the City limits. The City Attorney is also responsible for the prosecution of certain gross misdemeanors as set forth in the state statutes. The City Attorney is responsible for defending the City in all suits brought against the City. 

Duties

The City Attorney prepares and revises ordinances when so requested by the Council, any committee thereof, the City Manager, or a department head. The City Attorney also performs such other duties as are required by the laws of the State of Minnesota, by the provisions of the Charter, or by the City Council.
