If I were Mayor for a Day Essay Contest
What would Winona look like if kids were in charge?


 The City of Winona Department of Parks and Recreation invites all K-12 students to enter the If I were Mayor for a Day essay contest. 

 One winner from each grade will:

  • Receive a summer membership to the Bob Welch Aquatic Center.
  • Be sworn in as Mayor for the Day
  • Have their essay displayed at City Hall and the Winona Public Library.
  • One chosen essay will be published in the Winona Post and in the Minnesota Cities Magazine.

 To participate in the Mayor for a Day Essay Contest, individuals must:

  • Be a K-12 student who attends within the #861 School District boundaries.
  • Have completed the essay on their own.
  • Submit online or deliver to City Hall Park and Recreation Department. 
  • Include name, phone, and (if applicable) email address.

 Mayor Sherman will select winning essays based on creativity and originality. Some concepts to consider are recreation and parks, diversity and inclusion, affordable housing, and economic development. 

 Essays should appropriate to the grade level. Approximations are:

  • Grades K-4: One to three sentences up to one paragraph
  • Grades 5-8: Three to five paragraphs
  • Grades 9-12: Three to seven paragraphs

Submit entries online however if not possible, essays can be mailed or dropped off at the City of Winona Park and Recreation Department. Essays cannot be returned.
