Recreation Coordinator

The City of Winona is seeking two qualified candidates to fill dynamic roles in the park recreation department due to recent resignations. The employees that resigned chose to pursue other careers in the private sector and education. We wish them well and we will miss them, but the good news is that you now have an opportunity to join our fabulous team.

What specifically do the jobs do and what skills are needed?

These positions will require you to work independently under general supervision from senior staff. You can apply for one or both positions, but they are very different. We encourage you to think about where your skill set fits best before you apply.

Youth & Adult Sports

The Recreation Coordinator for Youth and Adult Sports oversees all sport programming from Pre-K to adult. Kid sports include lacrosse, T-ball, basketball, and preschool sports programs. Adult sports include leagues for basketball, kickball, softball, and volleyball. The coordinator will be responsible for managing all aspects of the sport seasons including  registration, hiring and training staff and officials, working with team managers, designing the league brackets, and all staff and league communications. In addition, this position will oversee special events and have the flexibility to create innovative programming. This position reports to the assistant recreation director and will provide input for budget development.

Outdoor Recreation

The Recreation Coordinator for Outdoor Recreation is responsible for leading the charge to embrace the beauty and landscape of the Winona area through trail development and outdoor programming. The City of Winona recently agreed to fund The Bluffs Traverse, a conservation and recreation area master plan to build a trail system to connect Sugarloaf, Garvin Heights, and Bluffside Parks. The primary focus for the next five years will be to build a trail system in the bluffs, on back waterways of the Mississippi, and connect the bluff trails to the Mississippi via city streets. The secondary goal of this position during trail construction is to create programming for citizens of Winona and to draw people to the region. This position will specifically oversee the ice climbing wall on a section of the bluff, trail development and maintenance, and oversight and programming of Lake Lodge recreation center. This position reports to the assistant recreation director and will provide input for  budget development.

  • Four year degree with two years of related experience
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Previous supervisory experience is desired since you will be managing seasonal employees and volunteers
  • If you don’t already have it, first aid, CPR and concussion certification must be obtained within six months of hire

Side note: If you read the job description it references experience operating an aquatic facility. That skill is fantastic but does not apply to either of these positions at this time. The job description is a general document that covers multiple focus areas of recreation coordination.
